Everyone knows that asbestos is dangerous and causes serious lung diseases such as mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer. It's difficult to identify asbestos when you don't know what it looks like, or where it might be in your home, however homeowners need to be aware of this potential hazard before undergoing any renovations.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre with several beneficial characteristics which made it very popular. Asbestos fibres are very malleable, and therefore very easy to incorporate into various products. In addition, the material is naturally a great insulator, resistant to fire and chemical erosion, and is very strong. It’s because of these characteristics that asbestos was known as the “magic mineral” and added into so many building supplies.

Where Will Asbestos be in Your Home?

In 1986 Canada banned asbestos from being added to drywall mud, however these companies still had asbestos-containing stock they needed to sell. For this reason, we like to be on the safe side and say homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos.

Homes built prior to 1990 should be tested for asbestos before any renovations, remodelling, or demolition begins. Asbestos was often mixed with other materials such as cement or insulation, so it can be difficult to spot. Asbestos can often be found in the following areas of your home:
